By the 2002 - 2004 years the W650 was an established retro twin, with the same 676 cc air-cooled parallel twin, classic peashooter exhausts and an electric starter with kickstart backup, as on the original 1999 bike. A magazine comparison of the era found it closely resembled a 1960s Bonneville, with an upright seating position that suited town riding but tired on longer highway runs. Its power was modest, with the strongest pull in the low-to-mid range.
